What was once barren, unproductive land is now a source of life. Thanks to new boreholes, providing irrigation water well, and strategic collaboration between local and international partners, we are integrating agriculture into reforested land to produce nutritious food crops in in parts of Senegal where the soil had long stopped giving.

🍅 What Grows from Collaboration?

📍 In partnership with Entrepreneurs for Entrepreneurs (OvO), irrigation systems and boreholes were installed at three key sites. APAF led the creation of horticultural gardens and provided training to local communities. VITO installed weather stations to guide planting and harvesting decisions. With support from the Flemish International Climate Action Programme and seeds supplied by Arvesta/Sanac.

In our forests, we grow more than vegetables. We grow futures. 🌱
By integrating agriculture into our reforestation, we’re on track to secure food for over 24,000 people. That is more than full plates: it means independence for women, stability for families, knowledge shared and hope that takes root.

And it all started with almost 2 million trees sown in Senegal. Lignaverda’s reforestation efforts do not just capture carbon. They restore the soil. Tree roots improve water infiltration and reduce erosion. Leaf litter enriches the soil. Trees further create a become cooler and more humid microclimate in which plants and animals can thrive. And so, suddenly, a garden is born.

What makes our reforestation project  in the Senegalese Sahel unique is the deep collaboration between organizations, each a specialist in their field. Lignaverda brought them together around a shared vision: to restore ecosystems and improve livelihoods, sustainably and structurally.

Because planting trees is not just about carbon offsetting. Carbon offsetting is merely financing us. Trees make life possible. They build resilience in the face of climate change. By restoring land through reforestation, we choose for long-term impact instead of short-term fixes.
