Empowering Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Senegal with Smart Weather Monitoring

At Lignaverda, our mission extends beyond reforestation; we aim to empower local communities with tools that foster sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture. A pivotal component of this initiative is the deployment of smart weather stations, such as those located in Mbar Toubab, Seno Ndawédiee, Labgar and Loumboul Djibby in Senegal.

Enhancing Agricultural Practices through Real-Time Data

The Flemish Government granted a subsidy to Lignaverda’s capacity building project ‘Let’s make the desert Green’, which is executed in the framework of the government’s International G-STIC Climate Action Programme (FICAP).

The smart weather stations in Mbar Toubab, Seno Ndawédiee, Labgar and Loumboul Djibby provide real-time data on critical environmental parameters, including:

            •          Temperature

            •          Precipitation

            •          Soil Moisture

            •          Wind Speed

            •          Relative Humidity

            •          Solar Radiation

This information is invaluable for farmers, enabling them to make informed decisions on planting schedules, irrigation needs, and crop management strategies.

Promoting Sustainable Land Management

By integrating these weather stations into our reforestation projects, we not only monitor environmental conditions but also support local communities in adopting sustainable land management practices. The data collected aids in:

            •          Optimizing water usage

            •          Reducing crop failure risks

            •          Enhancing soil health

            •          Improving overall agricultural productivity

Collaborative Efforts for a Greener Future

Our collaboration with local stakeholders ensures that the technology is accessible and beneficial to those who need it most. Training sessions and workshops are conducted to educate farmers on interpreting data and implementing best practices based on the insights gained. Moreover, to further enhance project ownership, the farmers have been trained and engaged themselves to do basic weather station maintenance (solar panel cleaning, sensor connection checking, etc.).
